Going to the Chapel and I'm...

Image
Gonna Be a Bridesmaid!! I woke up on Monday morning at 6 a.m. to my telephone ringing. As I groggily opened my eyes to my obnoxious "It's Peanut Butter Jelly Time" ringtone, I was actually pissed for a moment that a) the phone was ringing that early to begin with, and b) that I missed it! Without looking to see who it was, I laid back and shut my tired little eyes for just a bit longer of a snooze and then "do do do!" My phone indicates that I have a text message. I look down at my phone and a message from my sister reads, "Call me ASAP!" Well, you can imagine my concern as I scrambled to hum a few bars of song to get my speaking voice ready and dialed her back. In classic Kelley fashion, she doesn't answer... The phone goes right to voicemail leaving me anxious and well... irritated. I laid back down to drift off into Ray Allen dreamland and actually thought that I was at the Garden watching a game when I heard "Peanut Butter Jelly Time...

Dear Friends

Today I received an e-mail from my sister that made me think of all of the people in my life, how different they are, and how they all contribute in making me who I am today. Friends surprise you. It's amazing how you can have close friends who all really "know" you, but the experience of being "you" can be so different with each of them. These are the people in your life who you can go weeks without talking to and you don't have to feel guilty - you know that when you pick up the phone or get together, you will be right where you left off. These are the people who even when the road gets rocky, or you may not see eye to eye, are the ones who stand by your friendship first and then work through the rest. Each person has that little something extra; that quirk, or imperfection that makes them special. I realize at this point in my writing I am starting to sound like a parent having "a talk" with their child who is going through puberty and does...

Strawberry Fields Forever

Image
Ahhhhhhh.... there is nothing more like music to my ears than a good festival! What's not to love? Fresh air, great smells, fantastic food, live music, a "flea market" like feel for vendors, and some of the best people watching I have ever experienced. More to come on that, later. Today I went to the California Strawberry Festival in Oxnard, CA. I consider myself to be extremely lucky because in the short time that I have lived in California, I have already formed my core group of "festival going" friends that enjoy them equally as much as I do. I have been to a lot of festivals in my time and although this one didn't beat out the Pumpkin Fest last fall, it was still quite enjoyable. Let me backtrack and explain why the Pumpkin Fest was so wonderful for me. Fall is my favorite time of year and what I miss most about the east coast. Born in Worcester, MA and a die hard Boston sports fan, the thrill of apple picking, pumpkin picking, drinking cider, dr...

Forgive Me Father For I Have Sinned...

Image
Forgive me father for I have sinned, it's been 8 days since my last blog.... Ahhhh... the joy of being sick. For the past five days I have gone to work every day with a fever of 101, a sore throat, and a terrible cough. Granted, I didn't work full 8 hour days but I went in, kicked ass, and then came home and snuggled up on the couch wearing knee socks, sweatpants, sweatshirt, bathrobe, my Celtics knit hat and then covered myself with two blankets and a heating blanket. I know, sexy right? This has been the routine and given that I literally did not move from the couch unless it was to go to the bathroom, I have had plenty of time to think about some of the suggestions people have had for me to make a quick recovery. Go to the doctor - what a novel idea! Here's the deal kids. I grew up in a house with a mom who is a RN in the ER. Any illness, backache, complaint of pain was answered with "Oh you are fine! It'll go away just give it some time! You feel awful? ...

A Whale Of A Good Time!

Today I was amazed as I was reading about the woman who paddle boarded 40 miles (9 hours), by herself to raise $100,000 for Boarding for Breast Cancer and Keep a Breast Foundation on March 28th. All day I found myself watching news stories, reading articles and looking at pictures of this event because for 2 of the 9 hours, she was being followed by a Minke whale! I may have gotten to the story a little late, but I am so happy that I didn't miss it all together! Click here for the story. What did I find so fascinating about this? What isn't fascinating about this?! This woman used to be a professional surfer, she pushed her own physical limits, specifically asked to do it alone, and did it all for a friend who has been battling breast cancer for nearly two decades. She is an incredible inspiration. The second part of my amazement is the fact that this whale who has come to be known as Larry, came along and was playing with her! Larry was rolling on his side, blowing bu...

Do You Have My Back?

I would have loved to start this blog by saying I have the back of an 80 year old but that wouldn't be fair. My grandmother as you read yesterday, turned 87 and her back is way better than mine! I have four things working against me: 1. Homework, and lot's of it, requires I sit for extended periods of time. Sure, I get up and walk around every so often but it doesn't take too much time when I sit back down for me to feel my posture going from straight to hunched over. 2. At work, I am either sitting at a computer or carrying large boxes with a variety of weights up and down stairs all day. And yes, I am "lifting with my knees!" 3. I have never actually weighed my breasts before but I would think they are close to the weight of two cantaloupes! Are they great to have? Sure... but I would trade in a cup size or two for a guaranteed back pain free future in a heartbeat! By the way, even though I know that "breasts" is technically the right term, I still wou...

Age is Just a Number

Image
Today my grandmother, Desire Wuth, turned 87 years old. I can only hope that I will age as well as she has and grow up to be half the woman that she is. Age is something that I have been thinking about a lot lately as most of my friends and I are entering our 30's this year. I have watched some go through mild panic attacks about turning 30 and not being where they thought they would be by that age, and then go into a bout of depression for a short period of time after their birthday. To me, age is just a number. How old you are and what you have accomplished doesn't dictate how successful you are or define you. The only thing that matters with each passing day is your own happiness, self worth, having no regrets, and knowing that you are being true to yourself. There surely have been some times in my life where I have questioned my decisions, self worth, and been severely unhappy however with each passing year I have realized that by questioning these things, I have bee...
