A Whale Of A Good Time!

Today I was amazed as I was reading about the woman who paddle boarded 40 miles (9 hours), by herself to raise $100,000 for Boarding for Breast Cancer and Keep a Breast Foundation on March 28th. All day I found myself watching news stories, reading articles and looking at pictures of this event because for 2 of the 9 hours, she was being followed by a Minke whale! I may have gotten to the story a little late, but I am so happy that I didn't miss it all together! Click here for the story.

What did I find so fascinating about this? What isn't fascinating about this?! This woman used to be a professional surfer, she pushed her own physical limits, specifically asked to do it alone, and did it all for a friend who has been battling breast cancer for nearly two decades. She is an incredible inspiration. The second part of my amazement is the fact that this whale who has come to be known as Larry, came along and was playing with her! Larry was rolling on his side, blowing bubbles that smelled like farts, and keeping pace with her side by side for two hours! I can't begin to understand what those two hours must have been like for her... Sea creatures are not my thing but Minke whales that have no teeth and friendly jumping dolphins? I'll take those any day!

Something like this does not happen every day and everything happens for a reason. With Larry's publicity, the goal of $100,000 came closer to $120,000 raised! Larry helped raise awareness for two very important causes; Breast Cancer and Whaling. Minke whales are the most heavily hunted and the easiest catch because of their curiosity. Curiosity really does kill the cat.

I like to believe that Larry the whale came out as a symbol of hope. Hope for freedom in the sea?Hope for a cure? I sure hope so...
