Age is Just a Number
Today my grandmother, Desire Wuth, turned 87 years old. I can only hope that I will age as well as she has and grow up to be half the woman that she is. Age is something that I have been thinking about a lot lately as most of my friends and I are entering our 30's this year. I have watched some go through mild panic attacks about turning 30 and not being where they thought they would be by that age, and then go into a bout of depression for a short period of time after their birthday. To me, age is just a number. How old you are and what you have accomplished doesn't dictate how successful you are or define you. The only thing that matters with each passing day is your own happiness, self worth, having no regrets, and knowing that you are being true to yourself. There surely have been some times in my life where I have questioned my decisions, self worth, and been severely unhappy however with each passing year I have realized that by questioning these things, I have been able to accept them and understand how that has made me who I am today. I have no regrets. My only hope for the future is that I can live each day to the fullest and enjoy my life for what it is.My grandmother is an absolute inspiration to me with her huge heart, love for her family and lust for life. She eats her three meals a day, clips coupons, gets the greatest deals she can find, accepts everyone for who they are, goes to church, donates to her church and charities, has built a wonderful home in which she happily invites people in who are struggling, has very little want or need for material things to make her feel fulfilled, is constantly crocheting BEAUTIFUL table cloths for friends and family, has spent her latest years working in the local library as a way to get out of the house and make quality use of her time, never complains, and above all - she is the most forgiving person that I know. Born in 1923, she has lived through what I could never quite grasp in History class because I was falling asleep... As each year passes I continue to learn about her life and still have a lot I want to know. Given that I am 3,000 miles away from her and she doesn't know or care to know how to e-mail, does not use a cell phone, and does not have call waiting, it makes it difficult to talk to her as much as I would like. I haven't taken the time to know my grandmother as much as I would like and that is about to change. I am a part of her and am so very thankful.
Happy Birthday Nana!
