Do You Have My Back?
I would have loved to start this blog by saying I have the back of an 80 year old but that wouldn't be fair. My grandmother as you read yesterday, turned 87 and her back is way better than mine! I have four things working against me:
1. Homework, and lot's of it, requires I sit for extended periods of time. Sure, I get up and walk around every so often but it doesn't take too much time when I sit back down for me to feel my posture going from straight to hunched over.
2. At work, I am either sitting at a computer or carrying large boxes with a variety of weights up and down stairs all day. And yes, I am "lifting with my knees!"
3. I have never actually weighed my breasts before but I would think they are close to the weight of two cantaloupes! Are they great to have? Sure... but I would trade in a cup size or two for a guaranteed back pain free future in a heartbeat! By the way, even though I know that "breasts" is technically the right term, I still would rather refer to them as boobs. It's a much funnier word. Don't be such a boob!
4. I sleep on my stomach. Some may say that it is all a myth and sleeping on your stomach does not do any harm to your back but I am not too convinced. It's been 29 years of sleeping in an awkward side/stomach/pique (dancer term), position and I am ready to really start training myself to sleep differently.
I always start the night off with the intention of falling asleep on my back, but after restlessly laying there for an hour or two, I grow tired of waiting to fall asleep and turn over to get the sleep I am deprived of. Or, even if I do manage to fall asleep on my back, I always wake up flopped over! As soon as I put my feet on the floor my body lunges forward into a downward facing dog in order to stretch out my back and then I do a series of twists and turns to get all of the cracks out. My next purchase will be a foam roller so that I can really get in there and make sure every snap, crackle and pop is relieved each morning and night. I will also be buying a bunch of different pillows until I find "the one" that allows me to fall asleep on my back quickly, buying one of those big balls that I use at the gym and start using that as a chair, and perhaps I will go back to a chiropractor. The only thing that really bursts my bubble about all of this is that all of my potential solutions will cost me money that I don't have to spend right now! My money tree should be sprouting soon though...

I invested in a water-pillow and it has helped me out tremendously at being able to sleep on my back....highly recommend it. I too was a stomach sleeper and this pillow helps to get me to my back.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jill! I will try it out! I had a somewhat successful night on my back last night but as soon as I was even a little bit awake this morning, I flipped over! I will keep on trying..
ReplyDeletedear backache betty,
ReplyDeletebuy the pillows I just bought. I know they're expensive, but they work PERFECTLY. I love them.
